Near Salida, Colorado

Today we moved to the national forest below 14,275’ Mt. Antero to boondock for a few days. As I wandered near the site, I heard an insistent bird song. I gasped when I saw a male Western Tanager flying from branch to branch in a low pine nearby. While moving frequently it continuously sang its song, making it easy to track. What a beautiful bird! I have seen them before but only as a colorful streak disappearing into foliage.

Beautiful bird, great that you were able to get such great shots!
Thanks, Rob!
Wow! Never seen one myself. Stunning! We’ve got a black headed grosbeak that is singing constantly all day long, flitting around us. Such a happy song!
