Catch of the Day: the Lonely Snow Goose
Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay, California
April 18, 2023
At Half Moon Bay, this single snow goose was feeding on algae and palling around with a few Canada geese. Snow geese are not coastal birds. Flocks made up of thousands spend several winter months at inland California wetlands, such as Merced National Wildlife Refuge, before heading north to summer at their breeding grounds. Those geese are long gone. This goose somehow made it alone to the coast. I don’t know if it will try to fly on its own to find its compadres or continue to bond with the Canada Geese.
This photo was taken only 20 yards from the sandy beach as the goose fed in a stream flowing into the ocean.
