Catch of the Day: Birds After Sundown
Baylands Nature Preserve, Palo Alto, California
November 2023
One benefit of early sunset is I can easily take photos before, during and after it and still make it back to prepare and eat dinner at a reasonable hour. There are a set of old pilings at Baylands (a dock at one time?) that a variety of birds enjoy using. Some perch on them, others swim and wade around them. I recently discovered that, just as the sun sets, snowy egrets congregate on the posts, shooing away the cormorants or gulls that may have been present. One evening a group of seven American white pelicans joined them.
