Male Northern Harrier
April 17, 2023

This harrier flew by me yesterday carrying its dinner: a dark-colored bird of some kind, possibly a red-winged blackbird. The prey’s feet appear dark so it is not a starling or coot. Northern harriers eat a wide range of small animals: rodents, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Although I have seen many harriers, this is the first one I have witnessed carrying a meal.
