Moss Landing, California

Yesterday we chased whales across the Monterey Bay. After seeing a breaching whale twice just as we left the harbor, the humpback whales were relatively subdued. Occasionally spouting and skimming the swells, they mostly remained under water hunting their beloved anchovies. But I did see and photograph a variety of tails breaking the surface as they dove down to deeper troves of fish. I believe that every tail is a different whale.

Thrilling to see those tails. What magnificent beings they are!
Wonderful! I know they can be identified by their tails too…at least I’ve heard that.
