After leaving Salida, we headed toward the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, stopping for one night at Curecanti National Recreation Area. Although originally planning to stay through the weekend, our visit to Black Canyon was also only one night since I needed cell reception during that time and there was none in the Park. Other than that, the campground was great, remote and nearly empty with knee quivering, heart thumping views. From our campsite’s “backyard” we could stand along the plunging 2,000’ precipice overlooking the sheer vertical walls of mottled stone.
